A Live Dose of N’awlins

As I sit in the Atlanta Airport on my way to New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest, I am both excited and a bit uneasy. Going back to this city that has given all of us so much by way of music to see its premiere musicians gather for the first time since the damage Katrina left will be inspirational, no doubt. But I wonder…what else is in store there? How are the fine people of New Orleans looking towards the future? Are they planning to rebuild with sustainability at the forefront of their efforts, or will they, and we, collectively ignore the tides of Mother Nature? I will shortly get a first-hand look, and learn a great deal in the proceess.

More to come…

And The Winner Is…

Now that I live in the stix, I wait for films that I NEED to see. And I wait. Longer. Longer than that, even. My eyes have been on Capote since October, and I have been rather obsessed with witnessing Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance. Two weeks ago, it happened. And the man transfixed me and transformed me while he morphed into Truman Capote. I have been saying it for years, and I will say it again…Philip Seymour Hoffman is the absolute best working actor today.

Please allow me to highlight my favorite P.S.H. transformations, in no particular order.

-Brian Mahoney, in the dark and incredible depiction of a gambler’s fall from grace in Owning Mahoney.
– Spike Lee’s 25th Hour…that song in the club towards the end is hittin’ hard, too
– Love Liza – just see it. Huffing. And model planes. Scarring. Mentally. Awesome.
– Punch Drunk Love. Something about this film…
– Lester Bangs. Come on. He ROCKS Almost Famous. What a great film.
– Mamet’s State and Main. Superb.
– Talented Mr. Ripley, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, as Phil Parma, the house nurse with depth, FLAWLESS, The Big Lebowski…and on, and on, and on.

I haven’t seen all of his roles, but the sprinkle of some of the most enjoyable and hand crafted films over the past decade above will be worth revisiting. In fact, I am going to add all of these to my Netflix account now, in celebration of Hoffman’s upcoming Oscar win.

Mortified – Live and in Person

Embrace Via Embarrasment by Lui Liu

On a constant path towards clean and uncluttered space, every once in a while, I find myself nose-deep in journals I have written and revisit crushes from the past. My perspective often seems so dramatic when I read it years later, and is almost always FULLY LAUGHABLE. But I keep the damn journals, for some reason. To remind myself of my growth? Or to ensure everyone a good laugh at my expense once I leave this earth. Either way, what I find is often funny (even though it wasn’t meant to be when I wrote it) or painful, in a funny kinda way. Certain drunken evenings have inspired me to read aloud to my best girlfriends, which proved hilarious and even a bit cathartic, after I got over the embarrassment part.

In the same vein, Dave Nadelberg has created Mortified, “starring everyday adults sharing aloud their most embarrasing, pathetic and private teenage diary entries…” to provide “personal redemption through public humiliation.” These live performances started in L.A. and are now featured in NYC, San Fran, and Boston. And if you’re thinking of reading, you have to audition. Nearly half of those who audition are rejected. Now THAT’S mortifying.

On a side note and in the spirit of revealing oneself, I kept a particular diary when I was living in Colorado with my first love. It was a tumultuous love affair that ended with, shall we say, legal frustrations. An ugly period of lawyers and courthouses ensued, and I wrote about all of it – from the initial meeting of past love through all of the angst that led up to the split. In an attempt at concealing any incriminating evidence, I passed this diary on to an acquaintance who lived down the street, and haven’t seen it since. That was over 15 years ago. I was 19. Mortifying.
